The cold weather season is here and koi fish are now in hibernation. The dangers of ice covered ponds for fish can be deadly. During periods of extreme cold, a pond may freeze over. In a fish pond it is important to maintain a hole in the ice for proper air/gas exchange. Should a pond become ice covered, toxic gases will get trapped under the ice blocking out fresh air which results in oxygen depletion and inevitable fish death.

Depending on your climate zone techniques for winterizing a fish pond vary. We know some folks that float a basketball or beach ball around the pond. The air and water currents move the ball around the pond surface, preventing ice buildup. However in colder climates this technique is ineffective. Pond heaters (also called deicer) keep a hole open in the ice. Available in floating or submersible models, the pond heater turns on automatically when the water reaches freezing temperature.

In northern climates, where winter can be more severe, we suggest using an air pump to improve pond aeration. An air pump aerator (bubbler) blows oxygen into the pond, feeding fish fresh air, and the bubbling water action prevents ice buildup. If weather temperatures persist below freezing over extended periods of time, you may want to consider using a pond heater and aerator together.

Most important, should your fish pond freeze over, do not chip away at the ice! Such action is injurious to fish. Remember that when a pond freezes over it has an aquarium effect, so when you chip away the ice, the noise reverberates through the water shocking the fishes system. However, you may pour warm water onto the ice to create a new air hole.
