Koi and other pond fish normally have a balance of electrolytes in their body. Chloride cells in the fish gills remove electrolytes (calcium, chloride, magnesium, potassium and sodium) from the pond water. The lack of electrolytes prevents fish the ability of oxygen intake as well as carbon dioxide and ammonia release (osmotic shock). Pond salt provides the essential electrolytes that fish need to help reduce the risk of osmotic shock.
Pond salt reduces nitrite toxicity. Overcrowding of fish and overfeeding lead to elevated nitrite levels. This generally happens in new pond environments. Nitrites enter through the gills and prevent the blood from carrying oxygen resulting in nitrite toxicity.

Acid rain, mineral leaching, soil runoff decomposing plant and fish waste can cause unacceptable pH levels. Even tap water used to fill fish ponds and garden ponds can cause extreme pH levels. Avoid pH levels below 6.8, which will stress pond fish and suppress biological filter activity, and pH levels above 8.0, which will hamper the ability of most plants to absorb necessary nutrients. pH should be raised or lowered by no more than 0.5 units every 24 hours. Use 1 teaspoon for each 50 gallons of pond water.
