| PondCare Nitrite Test Kit measures for harmful nitrite levels in ponds.
Nitrite is a toxic by product of aquatic life. It may be present with ammonia if there is fish overstocking or overfeeding. Nitrite levels are an indicator of biological filter activity as well as pond water quality. In new pond setups nitrite levels rise, then drop in 2 to 4 weeks, indicating the formation of the biological filter.
It is important to add only a few fish during the first few weeks after the pond is setup. Once both ammonia and nitrite levels drop to zero, more fish can be added to the pond. General rule of thumb is 10 gallons of pond water for every 1" of fish. Be sure there is proper agitation and adequate oxygenation of pond water. If the nitrite level exceeds 0.50ppm, start making 25% water changes every 2 days until the nitrite level drops to 0.25ppm or less.
Protect your koi and goldfish from nitrite toxicity. Even a low nitrite level can cause pond fish severe stress which can lead to disease and fish death. Nitrite toxicity affects the ability of blood to carry oxygen through the body, leading to fish suffocation. Pond salt reduces the effects of nitrite toxicity and restores the natural electrolytes fish lose in stressful times.
Test kit includes: 180 tests, glass test tube, color chart that reads nitrite levels from 0 ppm to 5 ppm, reagent and instructions. |
